Description

This is a “new claret” from Bordeaux, made by Cornishman Mark Hellyar. The 18th century Château Civrac is located on the right bank of Bordeaux within the Côtes de Bourg appellation, just 5 minutes from Bourg in the surrounding rolling hills. The vineyards are planted with the classic Bordeaux grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and include a high percentage of Malbec.

The wine is a classic blend of mainly Merlot, with a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Malbec. It is made in a modern and approachable style with minimal intervention in the winery and a lot of effort is put into the work in the vineyard to get the fruit to perfection, which is then hand-harvested.

Each varietal was separately vinified before being aged in mainly new French and American oak barrels for 12 months. The components were then carefully blended to produce the final wine to be bottled.

The result is a rich, powerful and fruit-filled Claret, full of flavours of plums, damsons, berries and currants, with notes of chocolate, spice and pepper. The tannins are perfectly integrated and the finish is long and satisfying.

Château Civrac served at room temperature is a perfect complement to red meats and hard cheeses or can just be drunk with good friends
